Mellany Gandara has a great philosophy that will lead her to huge success as an actress and entertainer. She adheres to Rodney Yee’s credo, that when you stand in the present moment, you are timeless. And indeed, Gandara is always in the moment. When we were granted an interview, she quoted several philosophers, including yoga guru, Yee. Clearly, much more than many entertainers, the stunning beauty has a grasp on some of the elements of success- work ethic and the ability to be centered and focused.
The energetic Gandara has just begun to tap into her tremendous talent and creativity. The busy, multi-talented actress, model, singer, dancer and musician is bursting on the entertainment scene, having had a role in the box office hit “Iron Man.” A veteran of stage, she’s performed for the 2nd Story Theatre LA, excelling in the plays “Criminal Minds,” “Gloria Star” and “Three Little Turns.” She’s made an impact on the little screen, having had roles on hit television shows, such as “Charmed,” “Ugly Betty” and “Without A Trace.” And if that isn’t enough, she’s performed as a dancer as well, appearing in several music videos and over thirty stage productions, working with many acclaimed directors, including film, television and commercial veteran Jerry Zucker. For Gandara, she found the experience of television to be exhilarating. “The really memorable transition that I’ve had from stage to film would be Without A Trace,” said Gandara, who played a kidnapped Russian 16-year-old on an episode of the popular series. “It wasn’t that it was such a huge part, but it made me realize how much I love film and cinema.” She previously starred in an independent film, “Making Changes.” For that role, she did considerable research. “I went into a homeless shelter to talk to drug addicts that were in recovery,” said Gandara, who also finds time for community outreach, lending her services to homeless centers. “I kept researching for that part and Without A Trace came after. So I kind of already had my strong research done from doing that independent movie.”
Gandara attended The Academy of Art in Europe, where she majored in acting, but her secret passion was piano. “I played Mozart in front of the whole school,” she said. “It was the scariest thing. Piano was very personal to me. It was kind of my secret thing. I’d go home and play for myself, classical music and never really showcased it that much. It was the most terrifying thing ever. But apparently I did well. People told me that it was amazing.”
How she excels as an entertainer perhaps, lies in her talent as a singer. She is a huge fan of Mariah Carey and another popular singer that she’s had occasion to meet. “Norah Jones,” she responded when asked about her favorite singers. “As a person, she’s the most gracious person I’ve ever met and she’s so talented.” Last year, Gandara excelled in Paris, as a singer for The Star Academy, France’s version of American Idol. “I lived in Paris for the most of last year and made it to the Finals,” she said. “The whole experience was fun. It got me way over my fear of singing.”
Indeed, Gandara has an amazing career in the making. She recently dazzled photographers and journalists on the red carpet of the Hollywood Brazilian Film Festival, with the majority of the media in attendance inquiring about the young and brilliant star. A busy entertainer, she’s working on a CD and doing music tracks. Her future is bright.
