Considered one of the most precious stones on earth, it is also regarded as the hardest known mineral- tough, but shaped, over time, to be freed of visible flaws. Classical pianist Yongmei Hu encapsulates the essence of a diamond, coming into her own, beautiful, brilliant, enchanting, but more importantly, poised and polished.
As she sat with us at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Hu explained the importance that her father had in her life. Pushed by her father, she began to play the piano at the tender age of five. “My dad was an amateur musician, he played the piano, he composed, he was a poet at one point and he just loved the arts,” said Hu, born in Shanghai, China. “So apparently, he saw my talent and thought with my personality, that music would be very good for me.” Did he really see something in her? “He thought music would calm me down,” she laughed. Despite being nudged into music at any early age, Father knew best. Hu now realizes the benefit that music has had on her life. “I would say now that music is the best thing for me,” she reflected. “Not only does it suit me, but it’s good for me, too.”
Hu, later, at age 12, was accepted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. To illustrate her considerable prowess on the piano, there was only one slot available for pianists and she was chosen over 600 other applicants to attend the prestigious learning institute. She went through a series of grueling tests, math exams and a tough physical examination. “They test your heart, your blood, your eyes, everything,” she said. “It was not easy to get in.” She later excelled in several piano competitions in China and the U.S., including the Pepsi Concerto Competition, The Burlingame Club Competition and several other competitions, including an international competition in Switzerland. “Competition to me is never that important,” said the grounded pianist. “I don’t believe that competition is the right way. It’s a way to get you going a little bit, but in the real world now, I’m not that into it.” Also a teacher, Hu feels there’s bigger life lessons to learn than just competition. “I think the most important thing is your entire growth as a human being,” she said. “There are some extremely gifted kids that do things beyond the norm, which I think is great talent. What I’m more interested in is planting the seeds for their later growth.”
Part of Yu’s development as a concert pianist can be attributed to meticulous study with some of the best pianists in the world, including Aube Tzerko, a pupil of legendary pianist Artur Schnabel. She also studied at the prestigious San Francisco Conservatory of Music, majoring in piano. “The attention I got there was wonderful,” she said. “It gave me a lot of confidence and gave me the opportunity to work with some of the greatest artists that came into town, like Leon Fleischer and Andras Schiff, basically whoever came to the city of San Francisco.”
Hu, an incredibly gifted pianist, was once told by one of her music instructors that “what he saw (in terms of her playing) was like a great stone, like a diamond that takes time to polish, but a great stone.” Her fluid, torrid playing is reminiscent of a diamond, possessing perfect symmetry, dazzling those that are able to experience its brilliance.
