In a game that took place at the Staples Center, The Los Angeles Sparks lost to the San Antonio Silver Stars 82-65.
Joe Bryant, in a valiant effort in his second tenure as the Sparks coach, instilled pride in defense and a sense of team, led by Candace Parker.
Unfortunately, injuries took its toll on the team, as forward Parker suffered a devastating knee injury that sidelined her for much of the season.
However, there were many bright spots for The Sparks’ disappointing season. 6-2″ forward Ebony Hoffman had a tremendous season and established herself as a force in the WNBA. Veteran Tina Thompson showed veteran leadership, being the only player in the WNBA to have played all of its seasons. Joe Bryant proved he can lead a team and deserves an opportunity to lead The Sparks to the playoffs in a full season.
Becky Hammon, of San Antonio, scored a whopping 37 points in the game, scoring from all angles and proved an unstoppable force. She clearly demonstrated to the WNBA that she is a star in the league.
The Sparks have tools to build upon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their year. Look for great things to come from The LA Sparks next year. Attend their games. Attending The Sparks games is a pleasant family outing and fun for all. The Sparks Kids, T-Shirt giveaways and most of all, the excitement the team gives to the community is more than enough reasons to check out a Sparks game. For more details, visit www.wnba.com/sparks.
Special thanks to Patrick Hayes, Penny Toler and Ben Alkaly for all of their assistance in the 2011 season.
