This stunning actress has a poignant story to tell. She chronicles the story of a journey that takes her back to an era, an era whose remnants still linger. It’s an era of intolerance. Ultimately, love finds a way to triumph over obstacle. But sometimes, it must endure tests. Juliette Fairley’s play, “The Making of a Mulatto,” explores the trevails and struggles of growing up as the product of a bi-racial marriage, detailing her parents trials along the way.
“I felt like my parents had an interesting story,” said Fairley. “And I felt there was a lot to draw from. It was a window in time when the Americans went to Europe to fight the Nazis. It was a period of 8-12 years and in that time, there was a certain number of people like me born there.” Fairley, who was born in an American military base in Chateauroux, France, was a product of a French mother and Black father. Her father, James Fairley, was a member of the European Allied Forces. Juliette felt like she wanted to honor her parents’ rich legacy. “It’s a history lesson, my show,” she explained. “My father grew up in Jim Crow as a little boy, and he was affected by that. My mother grew up in the time when the Nazi’s invaded France and she was affected by that.”
Her mother, Mauricette Briquet Fairley, a Parisian who led a sophisticated lifestyle in France, suddenly found herself in severe culture shock after the military moved the young married couple to Texas. “Once they got married and had kids, they were finished,” she reflected on the prevalent racial prejudice that existed at the time. “No more glamourous job for you in communications, we’re going to put you way out somewhere in oblivion and that’s what happened.They would have liked have been in D.C or some other military base maybe on the East Coast, but they didn’t put Blacks there, they put the Whites there. And they put the Blacks down South.”
While growing up in the South, Juliette had to endure racial epithets at the age of eight, being called the N word. “That was my initiation into being Black,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it, I was shocked.” Juliette’s mother, upon seeing Juliette perform the show for the first time, admitted it drew considerable emotion from her. “I felt guilty,” said Mauricette Briquest Fairley. “I didn’t realize that bi-racial people have such a hard time in American society. I didn’t support her enough.I should have offered more support because the Whites discriminated against her as did the Afros. I didn’t realize it.” In the one-woman show, Juliette Fairley displays her range in the performance, lending her talent to multiple characters.
Juliette is also beginning to make a name for herself in Hollywood, having worked with legendary director Spike Lee. “I played the part of a reporter for a TV pilot,” she said. “It was for NBC and he was directing it for Barry Levinson and I auditioned for it and I got the role.” She was very surprised of how easy Lee was to work with. “I thought he was going to be angry, I guess the image of him is that of an angry Black man, but he was very nice,” she said. “He was really quiet and he was very playful.” The experience for her was perhaps a precursor of imminent success. “I had my own little trailer and I thought, wow, this is great, I could get used to this.”
Juliette Fairley’s “The Making of a Mulatto” will be performed in New York City at the Lower East Side Theater Festival on Sunday May 30 at the Theatre For The New City in Manhattan. She also will be performing the eye opening performance at the Whitefire Theater in Sherman Oaks, CA, 13500 Ventura Blvd on August 12 at 7:30pm. She’s also preparing her third one woman show, “Til Mixed Do Us Part,” which is slated to open in Los Angeles in September and October.
