The Tenth Anniversary BET Awards was televised live from the historic Shrine Auditorium on June 27, 2010 and hosted by Queen Latifah. Kanye West opened the festivities atop a rock formation performing the song “Power.” Prince received the Lifetime Achievement Award and John Legend received the Humanitarian Award. Stevie Wonder honored Prince via video remote coupled with live performances from Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding, Alicia Keys, and Patti LaBelle. Ms Patti kicked off her shoe and Prince appropriately caught it during her performance. Chaka Khan also honored Prince. This year, in addition to honoring entertainment and sports figures, special recognition was directed to educator Geoffrey Canada. Mr Canada is president and CEO for Harlem Children’s Zone providing educational, social, and medical services for residents in Harlem NY. His Promise Academy Charter school provides an outstanding education with the guarantee that all graduates will attend college.
Memorable performances during the evening included Chris Brown performing a medley of Michael Jackson songs in tribute. It seems as if Chris channeled the spirit of Michael as he moon-walked performing “Billie Jean,” danced in white light silhouette to Smooth Criminal, and performed his tear-drenched performance of “Man in the Mirror.” It was wonderful to see Monica pay homage to Deniece Williams whose song “Silly” Monica sampled for her new hit “Everything To Me.” El DeBarge’s medley had folks standing and dancing in adoration. The legendary Lena Horne’s picture was shown during the “In Memoriam” segment with Todd Bridges acknowledging the passing of his Diff’rent Strokes “brother” Gary Coleman. Tyrese honored the memory of Teddy Pendergrass in song.
Double winners for the evening were Alicia Keys – Best Female R&B Artist and Best Collaboration with Jay-Z “Empire State of Mind” and Nicki Minaj – Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Best New Artist. Additional winners were: Best Male R&B Artist: Trey Songz – Best Gospel: Marvin Sapp- Best Male Hip Hop Artist: Drake –Video of the Year: Beyonce featuring Lady Gaga “Video Phone” – Video Director of the Year: Hype Williams – Best Actress: Mo’Nique – Best Actor: Idris Elba – YoungStars Award: Keke Palmer – Best Movie: Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire – Subway Sportwoman of the Year: Serena Williams – Subway Sportman of the Year: LeBron James – Centric Award: Monica – Best International Act: Dizzee Rascal (UK) – Viewers’ Choice Award: Rihanna featuring Young Jeezy “Hard” – Fandemonium Award: Chris Brown. So not really on the same topic as your post, but I found this today and I just can’t resist sharing. Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”

I went to see Lady Gaga in april and let me tell you it was absolutely the most amazing thing in my life. loved it. I went with my friend and we wanted to get dressed up so we wore dresses and heels. (we were sitting). I was surprised at how many people actually dressed up like lady gaga with the coke cans in the hair and the crime scene tape. I wouldn’t wear heels to a concert again unless they were very comfortable and i would think twice about wearing a dress. i’d say a nice pair of jeans, comfortable shoes with a colorful top topped off with lady gaga inspired make-up. If you dress too plain trust me you will stand out, everybody goes all out and gets dressed up. You are very lucky i’d do anything to see Lady GaGa again 🙂 xx
