Opens 18th Annual Pan African Film & Arts Festival

Nate Parker performs an outstanding portrayal of Ben Chavis

The Screen Actors Guild in Hollywood premiered the film “Blood Done Sign My Name,” based on the novel written by Tim Tyson (played by Gattlin Griffith in the film). It chronicles social injustice, focusing on the crime of murder and the acquittal of a white businessman and his son. Unarmed victim Henry Morrow, a veteran of Vietnam, was murdered in Oxford, North Carolina during the early 1970’s. Based on a novel by Tim Tyson,  a young Ben Chavis (activist, former Executive Director of the NAACP, and organizer of the Hip Hop Network) lived in Oxford when his cousin Henry was murdered. Emotionally upset by the outcome of the trial, Black men take to the streets in protest, eventually marching on the state capitol. Nate Parker performs an outstanding portrayal of Ben Chavis in the movie which will open nationwide February 19. Written, directed, and produced by Jeb Stuart, this film also brings insight to the tobacco industry and social attitudes of the era. The Pan African Film & Arts Festival film portion was held at Culver Plaza Theatre 9919 Washington Blvd., Los Angeles CA February 10 – 17, 2010; the art show was presented at the Westfield Culver City (formerly Fox Hills Mall) 6000 Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles.
