Blair “Butta” Cobbs is a happy man these days. And he has every reason to be. He’s the writer of a hilarious new movie, Next Day Air, that has screened well for various types of audiences. The intelligent young man, who has the articulation of an Ivy League graduate, has “it.” You know “it” when you see it. “It” translates into a person that is destined for success. Yes, Next Day Air has the laughs of a movie like Friday, by Ice Cube, but gets serious enough to display the violence that can occur when a drug deal goes wrong. Cobbs knows those stories well, an all too familiar script in the hood, in the streets of Philadelphia, Newark, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles among others.
Cobbs, of Philadelphia, has first hand experience in hood life. “Right now, I’m in the middle of a transition from one thing to this,” said Cobb, referring to his newly founded success as writer for a film. “I’m just trying to do what I’ve got to do.” And so far Cobbs is doing a lot more than trying. Currently, the NBA, which has taken center stage on the sports scene, is showing trailers for the movie for its commercials, putting Next Day Air on a national medium. And the early reviews of the movie are great. Audiences, in the early screenings have been laughing their heads off.
But Cobbs hasn’t always had it easy. He spent some time at a boarding school as a kid, an extremely trying experience. That experience was reflected in his first movie, Ace Boon Coon. “It was about these kids that become friends in boarding school, then go back to Philadelphia and start hustling and how that life just destroyed everything,” he said. However, the movie lacked any sort of critical acclaim. “I never showed anybody that movie except one person, my partner, my boy.”
Cobbs attended the Philadelphia Art Institute, majoring in animation. “My drawing skills are crazy,” laughed Cobbs. “Out of five thousand kids, they picked 12 kids to intern at Disney and I was picked.” But life handed him another direction. Animation, at that time, wasn’t meant to be. “I was going down the wrong road,” he said. “Now it’s time for me to go ahead and get everybody else off that road and make it right.” Cobbs made it right. He later attended New York Film Academy, with a major in Directing. Although his first film received little fanfare, his second film, Next Day Air, got made. In looking at the final version of the film, Cobbs was very pleased. He spoke of the mood on the set, with Mike Epps providing a large contribution to the hilarity that prevailed. “Occasionally, Mike would do his thing, he would do something or say shit that would have us rolling,” he said. “It was to the point that all of us were holding their stomach, waiting for them to say ‘cut!’ He kept the energy so good on set.”
Cobbs, however, isn’t content to rest on his laurels. “I’ve got a mission,” said Cobbs. “I’m going to do ten movies straight. I’m going to bang out 10 movies before I take a break.” His plans for the break are to help others by personal appearances. “I want to become a motivational speaker. I want to go to prisons and teach people how to write, because the best stories are in jail. If I can do it, anybody can do it.” The philosophy Cobbs has can be adopted in any profession. “As long as you believe in your work and keep it true and you’re being real with it, it’s going to sell,” he said. “It might take seven years, (as in his project) but as you see, just have faith in God and it will happen.”
Blair “Butta” Combs has all the tools to be a big success, in Hollywood or in any endeavor he attempts to achieve. For that reason, Blair Cobbs is one of the People You Should Know. Next Day Air will open in theaters May 8th. If you want a fun movie and feel like laughing a lot, Next Day Air is a must see film.
