Fans Reflect On The Death of a Pop Legend
On Tuesday, July 7th, 2009, many fans all over the world mourned the death of pop superstar Michael Jackson. The Staples Center in Los Angeles was the locale of the celebration of his life and it was moving and poignant. Many celebrities spoke or performed, including Queen Latifah, Brooke Shields, The Reverand Al Sharpton, Usher, Mariah Carey, Smokey Robinson, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Jennifer Hudson and many more. Fans gathered in Hollywood at Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his parents home in Encino, Neverland and in locations all over the world. Jackson’s global impact cannot be measured in words and many of his fans celebrated his music and what Jackson meant to their lives.
“I can’t believe I made it,” said Barrett Blake, who travelled from New York to attend the funeral. “I also attended the inauguration. To be at two historic events in one year is unbelievable.” Russell Bowden, a long time Michael Jackson fan, attended the celebration at The Staples Center. “I thought the service was fantastic,” said Bowden. “It exceeded my expectations. I grew up with Michael Jackson in the 80’s. He was part of the fabric of the 80’s and everywhere you turned, you heard his music.” Dezzie Storne, of Savannah, Georgia recognized Jackson’s contributions to the world. “What he did with the ‘We Are The World’ thing is significant,” said Stome.”Michael was the best ambassador America had to bring people together. He gave over $300 million to tons of charities and fought AIDS in Africa.”
