In a hotly contested election campaign, Barack Obama won re-election for a second term as President of the United States.

Shortly after the polls closed on the West Coast, several networks, including CNN, MSNBC, ABC-TV, and many others projected Obama as the winner, once the state of Ohio leaned in the ex-senator’s direction.

In his victory speech, Obama struck a conciliatory, but populist message to remind America of its basic premise. “The task of perfecting our union moves forward, ” said Obama. “We are an American family and we rise or fall together as one nation. ” He urged leaders of the Republican party and members of Congress to work and help him solve the country’s ills.

Additionally, he promised to reach out to Governor Romney to help bridge the partisan divide.  “The best is yet to come, ” said Obama, who, after a hard fought campaign is looking forward to focusing solely on governing and making a difference.
